Uniqueness of Lavender

We are still learning the subtleties of lavender and its many varieties. It seems to like our sandy loam soil, and mostly, but not always, tolerates our winters. Lavender is a perennial plant that can be used in various forms such as essential oil, extract, plant (flower, stem, and leaves), and tea. It is also a popular ingredient in aromatherapy and can be used to create a relaxing and calming atmosphere. It has been used for centuries for its medicinal and therapeutic properties. Here are some unique properties of lavender that others have praised:

  1. Lavender has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that may help to heal minor burns and bug bites.

  2. Lavender may improve your body’s melatonin levels, supporting a better night’s rest.

  3. Lavender essential oil can reduce pain and inflammation.

  4. Lavender is soothing and calming for the skin.

  5. Lavender may help ease stress, anxiety, depression, mood swings, and worry.

Some folks are allergic to lavender and so should not use. Also, essential oil is very concentrated...think about 50 pounds of plants steam distilled down to about 250ml of oil. It's potent stuff, so use mindfully. A few drops in 4oz bottle of grape or coconut oil is all that is needed to make a sensory unleashing and healing massage oil. Keep away from infants and children and if pregnant consult with your physician before using.

Lavender Honey -- Bee Made, not Infused

Sure, Lavender Honey is just honey. And, sure, some folks don't like it much, but some have become aficionados and love it. Lavender honey is a delicate, aromatic mono-floral variety of honey with multiple beneficial health effects. It has been reported to have antibacterial and antiseptic action, antioxidant and digestive benefits and soothing and calming properties.

Our lavender honey is made as our bees work the about 2,500 lavender plants on the farm each summer gathering pollen and nectar. Pollen is what determines the variety a honey. Lavender honey should contain mostly pollen from lavender flowers -- around 45% of the total pollen count. We don't scientifically analyze our honey to that extent. We'd rather use our taste buds to see how well the bees did with the summer's vintage.

Lavender honey is usually a clear, very light yellow with rich golden undertones and a thicker texture.

This year's vintage had about a 14% water content, which means the bees really did their work drying it out. Some say Its appearance is like sun rays trapped in a jar. Our honey is raw and unfiltered, which means we never heat it up or run it through paper filters when processing. All raw and unfiltered honey will crystallize, as will ours. Which just means we didn't overly mess with what the bees created. It is simple to re-liquefy honey by placing in warm water.

This year's vintage of our lavender honey is SMOOTH. We think the lavender pollen and nectar cut the bite of sugariness some honeys have when first hit the tongue. If you pay attention, you will also note a hint of lavender on your taste buds as well as the earthiness of pollen particles.

Lavender honey contains a wide variety of vitamins and free amino acids that contribute to its beneficial health effects. Among these, a high level of Tyrosine, which is reported to be beneficial to producing mood elevating neurotransmitters. Bottom line, though, is to those who appreciate it's subtle and unique taste, lavender honey makes tea, toast and recipes taste wonderful.
